Journalist Trainings Organized by: New Economic School - Georgia

Financed by: USAID's Business Climate Reform Project

The Project

A year-long economic training course for journalists in economics and economic reforms. Over the past few years, the Georgian government has implemented numerous economic and social reforms. These reforms are sometimes difficult to understand not just by the Georgian population, but by businessmen, noted experts and journalists.

The trainings aim to teach journalists about the reforms, so they might share this information with the public. Journalists will also get a basic education in economics so they can better analyze current and future policies, and ultimately provide feedback via the media on whether reforms are working or not.

The project includes monthly three-day seminars held around Georgia, and a series of one-day workshops at NESG’s offices. Journalists are supplied with monthly reading materials about the reforms and other economic issues.

Fifteen active journalists and five students of journalism from around the country were selected for the project. They represent different media including print, television, radio, and Internet; and come from local, national, and international publications, as well as those published in Georgian and English. They competed to participate in the program by submitting applications and stories, and interviewing with the NESG team. Their employers signed contracts guaranteeing their full participation.

Seminars are interactive and include lectures, discussions, workshops, panels, working groups (games), etc.

The seminars are taught in Georgian, but some lecturers speak English or Russian with Georgian translation.

Seminars are organized by NESG staffers, with advice from Business Climate Reform project staff.
